I don't take this to be an entirely negative statement. It describes very well my visceral experience standing among these big buildings. To stand there with them is itself neutral (rather like being blind or asleep). I didn't resent or hate the sensation but nor did I get particularly enthusiastic about it. The buildings don't beckon my judgment in that way, they simply inhabit me, or I inhabit them.
