Today Julie visits the home of third US President Thomas Jefferson, Monticello with her parents, John and Katy Hamm. Mark was not able to be along with us today.

Julie talks about Jefferson and a little about Monticello, introduces her parents and we walk through the kitchen gardens. (1:50)

We continue on to Mulberry Row, where slaves lived and a number of the plantation's main functions occurred, like the joinery and blacksmith shops, and the smokehouse and dairy. We discover and solve the mystery of the wires going up the trees. We also visit the Levy grave site and talk about the Levy's role in preserving Monticello. (6:32)

After Mulberry Row we head up to the house, and the rooms under it, including the cidery, beer cellar, and the wine cellar. (16:56)

We play the Trouble in Mind, by the Virginia Blues duo Cephas and Williams. It came to us from the Podsafe Music Network. (21:25)

We are ushered into the house, and take the tour. We include some excerpts from the tour guide, including some interesting information about the clock in the entry to the house. (24:30)

We finish up talking about the tour of the house, then prepare to head back to our car. (30:13)

The main house that exists today is, for the most part, the house that Thomas Jefferson lived in during his retirement with the family of his surviving daughter, Martha Jefferson Randolph. Physically, the house is a fine example of Roman neoclassicism with influences from contemporary French architecture. Enlarged by 1809, the house itself has twenty-one rooms and is 100' long, 87' 9" wide and 44' 7" high (to oculus of dome). Often viewed as extensions of the main house, the two L-shaped, terraced wings contained further living and support spaces where some of the essential domestic work of the plantation was done. I don't take this to be an entirely negative statement. It describes very well my visceral experience standing among these big buildings. To stand there with them is itself neutral (rather like being blind or asleep). I didn't resent or hate the sensation but nor did I get particularly enthusiastic about it. The buildings don't beckon my judgment in that way, they simply inhabit me, or I inhabit them. In any case there we are, me and these big buildings and there isn't much to say about it.thomas sabo charms club

So I live in a place with big things and I find that these buildings are dumb.
ed hardy clothingThat is, they're mute. They don't say anything to me except maybe a monosyllable like 'mm' or 'um.' They're simply there and nothing else, and there is no back-side to them either. A lot of you have probably been to Seattle and you must have seen the mountain. It's Mt. Rainier but it's called 'the mountain' and I don't know how exactly it links to the built environment I've described (except that I can draw it for you) but I must say it is the most dumbfounding, most mute, biggest bigness I have seen. It hides in the clouds and when it emerges, the guest from NYC in the passenger seat will look and say: 'What is that?'. You can only say 'It's the mountain'. There is nothing else to say. What can you say? And I find these buildings have the same effect on me.thomas sabo charms club It's an effect that I think Rem Koolhaas described well in his 'Bigness', in the 5th of the theorems he said were latent in the book Delirious New York. He wrote 'together all these breaks - with scale, with architectural composition, with tradition - with ethics - imply the final, most radical break: Bigness is no longer part of any tissue. It exists; at most, it co exists. Its subtext is fuck context.'ed hardy clothing
